Did she cross the line?

When I went to observe in high school, I observed a freshman geography class. Before I even entered the classroom I was shocked by the teachers attitude toward the students. She was holding the door for the students as they walked in. One student asked if he needed is book and she said something along the like of "Are you really asking me that? I will chop you're head off." Throughout the rest of the class she referred to students as being dumb or retarded. She even told me that there was a retard corner in her classroom where all the stupid students sit. I was shocked about how she treated the students. I realize that she was just joking with them, but I still think that she crossed the line. Many of the students thought it was funny and joined in with her jokes. It was not that funny to me. What do you think? Did she cross the line?

I do not think she crossed the line in her classroom, but maybe was treading close to it. You remember what it is like in high school and how students act and respond in there. I am preparing to be a high school history teacher as she is and sarcasim works with many students. I know that some students may not like to be made in fun of or feel stupid, but i know if the teacher use sarcasim to attract and gain their attention then i agree with the teacher in this case. I do not think she really meant that her kids where stupid (unless she hates being a teacher), but if the students know she was joking around and it worked, then why not...It is high school, those students are changing every day...

I understand where you are coming from and your reaction to this situation. High school is a lot differnt and so are the students. I think you have a better understanding of this situation since you are planning on teaching a high school level. I am planning on teaching kindergarten and everything always has to be positive and encouraging. I may have thought this was worse than it actually was because I related in to the grade I want to teach.

The students did think it was funny and went along with the jokes. I just hope that none of them took the comments from the teacher too seriously. There are some people who put on a front to fit in with thier peers. Some of these comments may really be upsetting them, what do you think? What would you think if this happend in a younger class such as middle school or kindergarten?
